Homework Club
Linda Delgado
The homework Club is up and running, thanks to the great work of Marilyn Jaquith, Jennifer Peck, and Charo Gioia. Working on this project with them was especially gratifying, as it was the perfect example of what parents can do in a school such as ours. We met each Tuesday night for the last month, planning the Club and getting to know each other.
Last night we met with a group of parents and students interested in being a part of this program. We trained parent volunteers, and answered questions. Students will arrive today at 3:30 for a brief snack time, an hour of quiet for homework accomplishment, and the support and structure so helpful in any endeavor.
As the information in last Manzy pack said, this is not a drop-in program; participation requires a written commitment from both parent and student. For more information, please call the school office, and leave a message for Linda.
Is the issue of homework a battleground with no winners in your house? Try these simple suggestions, and adapt at will.
Let's get on the same team, and get this stuff done.
Ask to see homework, and praise effort when appropriate.
Help your child to be organized. Encourage them to organize their binders weekly. Set aside time, and help at first. Helping your child develop a system can make a difference in academic matters.
Make sure they have and bring all materials. Everyday they need a binder, with paper.
Provide a tidy, well-lighted place to accomplish homework. The kitchen table works well (you can keep an eye on them), although some children prefer their room.
Encourage focused work for 30 minutes, then a 10-minute break. Actually set the kitchen timer so you don’t need to negotiate when it starts and stops. Repeat the cycle until the work is done. This is more efficient and useful than straight-through time.
Encourage your child to use a weekly planner, or at least to think ahead. Are there several big projects coming at them? Encourage them to think about their time management!
Have your child start homework before dinner. Schedule a set break, and have them begin at the same time each day.
Make sure your child does the work! Help by suggesting a step, then walk away. As needed return to give next step.
Good luck! Linda
Manzy Students on their way to Washington D.C.
Gina Rivera Cater
For the first time in Manzy history thirty seventh and eighth grade students will be venturing off to Washington D.C. Gina, Linda and six parents will accompany the group. The trip is scheduled for April 23rd through the 30th. Students will begin their tour in Williamsburg
Virginia, an old colonial town, explore D.C. and visit an Amish farm in Lancaster Pennsylvania. Other hot stops include Jamestown, Yorktown, Capitol Building, meeting with Congressman Miller, Mt. Vernon, Smithsonian tour, Gettysburg and more. Students will be creating a photo journal highlighting their travel experience.
Thank you for your continued support and look for up coming Tupperware sales. Students will sell Tupperware one last time to earn spending
money. A special Thank You to Alma Ocampo who organized the Nacho Sales and Tinna Manasala who organized the Homemade Soup Lunches.
Appreciations to all of you who donated food items, dedicated your time and prepared soup.
